The hydrothermal carbonization process (HTC) is commonly used as a method for the thermal conversion of feedstock characterized by a high moisture level. The most popular materials are biomass, sewage sludge and food waste. As a result of the HTC process a solid product, hydrochar, is obtained, which serves as a substitute for non-renewable fossil fuels. It is characterized by a high content of carbon. Additionally, process water is produced, which contains salts and organic substances. Also, the presence of phosphorus and nitrogen compounds in process water, allow it to be used in the agricultural industry as a liquid fertilizer. The properties of products of the HTC process depends mainly on the set parameters: temperature and residence time. In this research the feedstock of organic matter was used in the HTC process and then the physical and chemical properties of hydrochar and process water were analysed. Based on the results, the potential of using the products of the HTC process in various industrial sectors was assessed.
